Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Right-hander Nick Masset will get that start after all, just not over the weekend, when it was expected.
Following Friday's rainout, Masset was scheduled to start Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. But lefty Mark Buehrle, who only pitched an inning before the rain fell in that Friday game, sent a text message to manager Ozzie Guillen in the morning and begged his way into the start. By pitching Buehrle on Saturday night, however, the club knew that someone would have to step up and start a game in Minnesota, and on Monday, Guillen announced it would be Masset in Wednesday's afternoon game at the Metrodome.
"It doesn't bother me if they let me know the day before or four days before," Masset said. "It doesn't change my outlook or what I'm going to do to prepare myself for that day.
"I prepare myself for any situation, and I have some experience starting. So I know what I have to do to prepare myself for that start. Basically, go out with my best stuff, pitch to contact and try to get as many innings in as I can."
If it wasn't going to be Masset, the other options were John Danks or Buehrle on three days' rest. Considering the club came into the season wanting to lighten Buehrle's workload in the first half of the season as much as possible, he was just about out of the question.
Danks is only in his second year and considered a future starter, so he was also not really considered.
"One (has been) overused for all these years, and one is too young," said Guillen of Buehrle and Danks. "I can't take any chances. We can't take that risk.
"If this game was in September, or we were in the pennant race late in the season... we'd think about it. Right now, it's too early to make those crazy decisions."
WHITE SOX 3, ORIOLES 3 (suspended after 11 innings): The game was suspended because of rain and will be played later this season, with no date yet announced.
Not that the game should have even reached that point, as the closers from both teams blew save opportunities. First, Sox closer Bobby Jenks allowed an RBI single by Melvin Mora to make it a 2-2 game. The Orioles took a 3-2 lead in the 11th, but Baltimore closer George Sherrill blew his first save opportunity of the year when he allowed Juan Uribe's home run in the bottom of the 11th.
