Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2008-09-01

Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2008-09-01
Manager Ozzie Guillen has made the decision to be safe than rather sorry.

With a professional career-high 160 2/3 innings on John Danks' arm, the fifth-year manager is taking extra caution with the 23-year-old left-hander, giving him an extra day of rest between starts.

Instead of taking his regular turn Monday against the Cleveland Indians, Danks will go Tuesday in Game 2 of the series at Progressive Field. Manager Ozzie Guillen said lefty Clayton Richard (2-2, 6.23 ERA) will get the start Monday.

Danks said he had to do a double-take when he saw the rotation posted for the Indians series.

"They just said I've been better with the extra day," Danks said. "I don't make the rules here, I just follow them. I'll just go out and pitch the best I can on that second day."

In the six starts Danks has operated with just one extra day of rest since June 1, he is 4-1 with a 3.03 ERA. Danks is coming off a rough outing Wednesday, when he allowed four runs and seven hits in just four innings in an 11-3 loss against the Baltimore Orioles. Danks' previous career high was a combined 156 innings in 2005 at Class A Bakersfield and Class AA Frisco.

"We don't want to try to overdo any of those guys because of our situation," Guillen said, referring to a rotation that is dealing with the loss of veteran Jose Contreras. "And that's the reason we did it. For us, it's not a big deal."

Danks seemed to shrug off the decision, though he said his goal entering the season was to pitch 200 innings. He's on pace for 191.

"Do I need it? No," he said. "But you always welcome it. During the long grind of the season, any extra day you can get, you'll take it.

"I want the ball as much as they will give it to me. They wanted to push me back a day, and I'm totally fine with that."

WHITE SOX 4, RED SOX 2: The White Sox avoided the sweep in Boston on Sunday, not only giving starting pitcher Gavin Floyd his 15th win of the season, but assuring themselves of waltzing into Cleveland for a three-game series still in first place in the Central Division.

Thanks to a two-run home run by Jim Thome in the first inning, Floyd played Houdini all afternoon, working his way out of jam after jam. As for Thome, his longball tied him for 14th on the all-time list with Mickey Mantle at 536.
