Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2008-09-20
The likelihood of outfielder Carlos Quentin playing for the White Sox this season is still a long-shot at best, especially when Ozzie Guillen is saying things like, "I don't believe in miracles," like the fifth-year manager said on Friday.

Quentin, who had surgery on Sept. 8 after suffering a fracture in his right wrist, rejoined the team on Friday and continued his rehabilitation program with range of motion drills, as well as taking some "light swings" with a stick-like device.

"It felt tight," Quentin said of the work he put in. "It felt like it had been in a soft cast and immobilized for a week. As far as pain, it's minimal, I think. That's good for right now. There will be some pain, I assume, involved when I get some range of motion back. But when the doctor looked at it, he looked at the X-rays and liked what he saw. The pins and the wire in there make it very stable, very strong, so he was very happy with that."

Guillen warned Quentin not to throw a timetable for a return out there, however, and the All-Star outfielder kept to the script.

"My goal is to get back as soon as possible," Quentin said. "I would be extremely happy to make it back for the playoffs, given that opportunity. We are not going to put a time frame on it. We are going to push as much as we can and just use what we have (Friday) and (Saturday) as building blocks to get me back where I can perform and have my health not questioned as far as re-injuring it. We want to get to that point where we are confident we can get out there and sustain playing the game."

Quentin has been taking different vitamins, as well as wearing a bone stimulator and spending time in a hyperbaric chamber in order to speed up his recovery, but he's running out of time.

"Hopefully he can make our club better, but right now I have a plan, and I'm going to stick with a plan," Guillen said, hinting of life without Quentin the rest of the season. "Carlos coming in would be awesome, but I don't see him healing quick after they take the pins out."

WHITE SOX 9, ROYALS 4: After scoring just three combined runs in their last two losses in New York, Sox hitters took their frustrations out on Kansas City pitching -- an easy group to take your frustrations out on. Alexei Ramirez provided the early thunder, connecting on his third grand slam of the season, while Dewayne Wise hit two homers and Jim Thome hit No. 33.

As for Mark Buehrle working on short rest, the southpaw was sharp enough to keep Kansas City's lineup off balance for six innings of work, with his only mistake coming on a three-run homer by Mark Teahen in the fourth inning.
