Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2009-04-07

Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2009-04-07
The three-game series with Kansas City to open up the regular season might have a little more drama than expected.

Besides weather playing a factor at U.S. Cellular Field this week -- Monday's opener was rained out -- there is also a question of how much bad blood between the White Sox and Royals has carried over from last season.

During the White Sox's 14-3 loss at Kansas City in August, the beanball war finally boiled over when D.J. Carrasco plunked Miguel Olivo, leading to Olivo charging the mound and the benches clearing.

Carrasco and Olivo were both tossed, with manager Ozzie Guillen soon joining them. Afterward he said, "Sometimes people have to have a little common sense. Talking about the umpires, not Olivo -- but he overreacted. I wonder why they would think I would throw at a guy with the bases loaded. I'm not going to bring in a guy to throw 85 to hit someone. (Two weeks ago), I told Carrasco to hit him. This time, no. I'm a professional. If they think we hit him on purpose, they are wrong."

These teams had a history in 2008, starting with a June 4 Sox win in which reliever Octavio Dotel hit Jose Guillen and Olivo. Dotel apologized to both.

In July, Kansas City pitchers played target practice with Sox hitters all weekend, including Jermaine Dye getting plunked on the knee by Horacio Ramirez and having to be helped off the field. Carrasco was brought in to send a message back to Kansas City in that July 20 loss but missed on an inside pitch to Billy Butler.

During Sunday's workout, however, Guillen said that 2008 was behind them.

"Hopefully nothing happens here," Guillen said. "Last year, it was kind of rough. I tried to erase it. It's a brand new year and hopefully that thing is in the past. I'm the type of guy who don't like to carry over anything. I don't think we should have any problem this year and I'm not looking for one, but in the meanwhile, I will continue to manage the way I manage all my career.

"We have anything against anyone? No, we go out and play the game and try to beat them."
