Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Second baseman Chris Getz isn't about to say he has solidified the vacancy at the top of the White Sox lineup.
The fact is, Getz knows that while he's been holding down the leadoff role so far since taking it over from Dewayne Wise after just two games, he's lucky to have the opportunity. "Just to get off to a decent start like this, it eases my mind because you always have a sense of pressure on yourself to do well, let alone being a rookie and trying to earn your keep with the team, the coaches and everything," Getz said. "Hopefully, they can relax a little bit, fans can relax a little bit, and we can just go out there and play."
But in finishing up the series with Baltimore on Thursday, and having the chance to watch second baseman/leadoff hitter Brian Roberts for three games, Getz was well aware that it could have been Roberts wearing a Sox uniform. That would have meant Getz likely would still be in the minors.
Sox general manager Ken Williams admitted the club inquired about Roberts last May, and the asking price from Orioles GM Andy MacPhail at the time was Alexei Ramirez, Josh Fields and either John Danks or Gavin Floyd. In other words, too much. Williams obviously said no thanks, and because of that Getz is now the starting second baseman/leadoff hitter, while Roberts remains with the Orioles.
Coincidentally, Getz knows Roberts and his family, and he worked out with him a bit in the offseason.
"His style is, well, he's obviously a switch hitter, second baseman, not necessarily a power guy, but good speed, so he would be a guy that I would look to," Getz said. "We have somewhat similar skill sets. I know I enjoy watching him play. It would be great to have a career like him."
First things first. Getz is still settling in as Chicago's leadoff hitter, hoping to develop into that top-of-the-order type player who can be counted on for years to come.
"I'm not sure if anything is solidified," Getz said of his new role. "We're two weeks in. I'm still not a prototypical leadoff guy, considering in years past you had guys stealing 40, 50 bags in the leadoff spot. I'm probably still more of a prototypical two-hole hitter, but with that being said, I can still hit leadoff and make a positive impact on a team."
ORIOLES 6, WHITE SOX 2: Just hours after manager Ozzie Guillen was raving about how much of a surprise Bartolo Colon had been so far this season, there was the manager, out on the mound, yanking Colon after three innings. The righty had his worst start of the year, lasting just three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.
It took until the eighth inning before the Sox offense made its first real appearance of the evening, with Jim Thome picking up a two-run single to make the score respectable.
