Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2008-05-30

Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch 2008-05-30
As of Thursday, there remained no dialogue between manager Ozzie Guillen and shortstop Orlando Cabrera, and that was just fine with Guillen.

What he wanted to avoid was general manager Ken Williams feeling as if he needed to step in. That's why Guillen spoke on the phone to Williams on Wednesday night.

"We have so many good guys here, to start thinking about one little problem here and there, I think it's over with," Guillen said. "I talked to Kenny about it and said, 'Let me handle the situation.' I don't want Kenny to be involved. Kenny's got so much stuff to worry about.

"The last thing I want to bring Kenny is a clubhouse problem. He doesn't need that, and (board chairman) Jerry (Reinsdorf), he doesn't need that. That's why I'm managing, to handle that."

Cabrera grabbed headlines early this week when Guillen warned him about calling up to the press box during games to harass the official scorer over errors charged to him, basically because of how it would look to his teammates. Cabrera then fired back that Guillen wasn't sticking up for him.

Guillen did hear that Cabrera had spoken to several teammates, but he didn't ask what was discussed.

"I've known 'Cabby' for a long time, that's why that thing doesn't bother me," Guillen said. "Hopefully, everything is square. We've got four months of the season left, and we're playing good. The last thing we want to be measured with is inside stuff with no reason. There's a reason we brought this thing up, but there's no reason to talk about it when it should be resolved."

As far as plans to have a sit-down with Cabrera, there are none.

"No, not yet," Guillen said. "I don't want to talk to him. I don't see any reason. If Orlando wants to talk to me, he can talk to me as a friend, he doesn't have to talk to me as a manager."

WHITE SOX 5, RAYS 1: Lefty John Danks was the latest Sox starter to make it look easy. He improved to 4-4, lowering his ERA to 2.86. The only run the Rays (32-22) could muster came in the third on a Carl Crawford RBI single.

"We know this division is very winnable right now," Danks said afterward.

Only A.J. Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez didn't get a hit, and Paul Konerko and Joe Crede homered. It was the Konerko homer that had manager Ozzie Guillen breathing the biggest sigh of relief, mostly because it was his first baseman's first since April 27.
