Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Paul Konerko still won't commit to a timeline as he tries to recover from a strained left oblique, but at least there was progress Tuesday.
Konerko was expected to go to Class AAA Charlotte on Sunday, and begin his rehab assignment for the Knights on Monday. But the process of breaking through the scar tissue proved too painful for Konerko at the time. Tuesday, however, he had his best batting practice session since the injury occurred.
"It was a good day. I took a lot of swings on the field today," Konerko said. "I was definitely more encouraged today than I was the last few times out there. We'll take it for what it's worth and see how it bounces back. That's it. We're not trying to really fight the urge to say or think more than that. Just take it for what it's worth -- and move on to Wednesday."
Konerko has been working on his core, as well as rehabbing the injury, but his big concern remains how much bat speed he can generate as he fights through slight pain still in the area.
"It's still there, but I like the way I felt," Konerko continued. "I was more in control where I could power through it instead of it powering through me. And again, we'll see how we bounce back Wednesday. It's my first go-around with this stuff, and it's up and down every day."
Manager Ozzie Guillen continued to say he wants Konerko ready when he feels ready and doesn't want to rush him.
"One thing about it, when you have that type of injury, the biggest thing is don't be afraid to swing," Guillen said. "Because it's painful. He hit a couple balls out of the ballpark. He hit the ball (to the) opposite field. For me, what I saw, I think he's not too far away from being back playing."
WHITE SOX 3, INDIANS 2 (10 innings): The Sox still showed that they need the long ball in Tuesday's win, but for the first time in a while, they also showed they could generate runs and win with a little small ball.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th thanks to a Casey Blake solo home run off Matt Thornton, Alexei Ramirez tied the game up with a solo home run. After DeWayne Wise reached first, he stole second and then scored on an Orlando Cabrera RBI single up the middle. It was the sixth straight win for the surging Sox, and their eighth straight at U.S. Cellular Field.
