"He's one of the kids you have to demand it," Guillen said of the orders he gave Quentin to arrive late to the park. "All of a sudden, he starts taking batting practice and going in the cage. That's not a day off.
"I told him to be ready in case we need a pinch-hit late in the game. But this kid is so mentally tough. He needs a (day off)."
And Guillen made sure not to use him in the 11-3 loss to the Orioles, instead starting Nick Swisher in left field, while Jermaine Dye hit in Quentin's No. 3 spot of the batting order. Not that Quentin and his American League-leading 36 home runs could have helped in the blowout loss in Camden Yards.
With Thursday a scheduled off day for the team before the Boston series, the plan was to allow Quentin to have two days off before returning him to the lineup against the Red Sox.
ORIOLES 11, WHITE SOX 3: John Danks picked a bad time to have one of his worst starts of the season, as the Orioles hammered the second-year left-hander, getting him into the showers after just four innings. Danks allowed four runs on seven hits and was far from efficient, using 93 pitches along the way. He was replaced by Lance Broadway.
As far as the Sox offense, Paul Konerko was just about it, as the first baseman hit his 13th home run of the season in his two-hit night. The Sox also lost a game in the standings, now only leading second-place Minnesota by a game in the division race.
