Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-08-30
--Rosters can expand Monday, and the White Sox are expected to promote RHP Ehren Wassermann, C Cole Armstrong, OF Jerry Owens and INFs Chris Getz and Josh Fields. Worth watching is whether the Sox promote relievers Mike MacDougal and Boone Logan. MacDougal is in the middle of a three-year, $6.45 million contract that is guaranteed through next season. The former big-league closer was sent to Class AAA Charlotte on April 26 and has become the forgotten man, taking an 0-4 record and a 3.99 ERA into Thursday. Logan was cut loose Aug. 9.

--RHP Scott Linebrink could pitch in a simulated game as early as Monday in Cleveland with the possibility of returning to the Sox within a week. At least that was the hope of pitching coach Don Cooper, who confirmed that scenario after Linebrink threw a 30-pitch bullpen session before Friday night's game at Fenway Park. The quick review of Linebrink's latest session was plenty of velocity and no discomfort behind his right shoulder. Linebrink hasn't pitched since July 22.

--OF Ken Griffey Jr. was the odd man out of the starting lineup on Friday, as manager Ozzie Guillen wanted to have the hot-hitting Nick Swisher in the lineup, as well as in the outfield for defensive purposes. Swisher is a better fit to track down balls and crash into the walls at Fenway Park than Junior.

--RHP Octavio Dotel has allowed four home runs in his last four outings, a span of three innings, making RHP Scott Linebrink's return an even more important wish atop the Sox's list. Dotel has an 8.68 ERA in his last 11 outings, giving up nine earned runs in 9 1/3 innings. It was Dotel who was being counted on as the eighth-inning set-up man when Linebrink went down. Now, Ozzie Guillen is forced to go with matchups, using Dotel, as well as LHP Matt Thornton.

--Manager Ozzie Guillen is no stranger to ripping on old ballparks, as he often does with Wrigley Field, but the fifth-year skipper has no major issues with Fenway Park, baseball's oldest. "You feel the electricity of the ballpark and the fans and of the team," he said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7.15 -- Through Aug. 24, the ERA for White Sox relievers in the eighth inning since Scott Linebrink left that role with an injured shoulder in late June. Linebrink was dominant in the eighth-inning role with a 0.67 ERA in 29 appearances.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "JD is the most consistent player in the five years I've been here. He puts up numbers, is the MVP of the World Series, and no one knows about it. I love him. He's the most consistent player I've ever had." -- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen on the importance of Jermaine Dye to the lineup.
