Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-09-01
--LHP Clayton Richard will make his sixth start of the season when he faces Indians ace RHP Cliff Lee on Monday, who will be seeking his 20th victory. Richard has yielded a .324 batting average as a starter. He's coming off a solid start Monday, when he allowed three runs and six hits in six innings of a 4-3 victory over the Orioles. It was that outing that convinced manager Ozzie Guillen to stick with Richard a bit longer. "I think he threw well last time," Guillen said. "And hopefully he performs the same way he did last time. This kid has a chance to have a good thing going on for him, and hopefully he does it."

--RHP Lance Broadway was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte after Saturday's loss and a familiar face was back with the team prior to Sunday's game with the Red Sox, with the Sox promoting LHP Boone Logan from the Knights. Broadway was 1-0 with an 8.44 ERA in four outings, but manager Ozzie Guillen explained that the main reason for the promotion of Logan had to do with their potential postseason roster. Despite a rocky ending to his previous stint with the club, the Sox believe Logan still can help as a situational lefty, especially if they make the postseason. They want to be armed with two lefties in Logan and Matt Thornton. As for Broadway, he will stay with the team and likely rejoin the bullpen when the rosters expand on Monday.

--Manager Ozzie Guillen still wasn't 100 percent sure who GM Ken Williams will promote Monday in Cleveland, but the expectation is that CF Jerry Owens, 3B Josh Fields and 2B Chris Gets to be among the first wave of promotions.

--RHP Scott Linebrink is expected to pitch his first simulated game since going on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 23) with what was called shoulder posterior inflammation. The hope is to have him back by the end of next weekend now, however, as long as there are no setbacks.

--C Toby Hall got the starting nod on Sunday in the win over Boston, giving C A.J. Pierzynski his usual breather for a day game after a night game. Pierzynski, however, could play all three games against the Indians, with Thursday an off day.

BY THE NUMBERS: 536 -- The career number of home runs for Sox slugger Jim Thome after he connected on a longball Sunday against Boston. That number moved him into a tie with Mickey Mantle for 14th on the all-time list.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's so cool just to have it there. That's where it should be. I'm so glad that we did it and it's where it should be. It's safe, it's where baseball fans can see it." -- Sox slugger Jim Thome, on delivering the ball from his 500th home run to the Baseball Hall of Fame with his father last week.
