Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-09-05
--GM Ken Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen took their lumps a few months back with the release of INF/OF Pablo Ozuna. Now the decision to keep INF Juan Uribe over Ozuna has paid off big time. Uribe's play at third base with Joe Crede down could have saved the season. "That's one of the reasons we made the decision we made a long time ago," Guillen said. "We know Uribe is going to help us. When we made the Ozuna decision, it looked like we don't know what we're doing. But when we made that decision, it took a lot of weeks to think about that decision. And we chose the right one because I believe Uribe can play all three positions better than anyone, and he's doing it right now and swinging the bat better and now he's the biggest part we have."

--RHP Scott Linebrink was available to pitch in Wednesday's win, but manager Ozzie Guillen said that with a two-run lead in the later innings, he didn't feel comfortable throwing Linebrink in there for the first time since late July. But the veteran won't be held out of the fray much longer. Guillen did say that Linebrink should be ready for eighth-inning duties this weekend against the Angels. Linebrink had been on the disabled list with inflammation in his shoulder until Monday.

--OF Carlos Quentin did leave the Cleveland area early Wednesday, but the club said it had nothing to do with the fact that the sore right forearm that kept him out of the starting lineup in the Indians series was more serious than first thought. Because Quentin wasn't going to play Wednesday, the White Sox sent him back to Chicago so he could get treatment at their facility and continue to rehab with the hope of returning to the lineup Friday.

--2B Alexei Ramirez hit No. 5 in the order for the first time this season Wednesday, and it won't be the last. After watching Ramirez go 1-for-4 with his 16th home run of the season in the win over Cleveland, manager Ozzie Guillen said he would continue to use Ramirez wherever he's needed. The rookie has hit from leadoff to the No. 9 spot. He has five home runs in his last 15 games, as well as 19 RBIs in that time.

--DH Jim Thome will be back in the lineup Friday after just making a pinch-hit appearance Wednesday. Manager Ozzie Guillen wanted to use the day game, as well as Thursday's scheduled off day, to get Thome a bit of rest before a 10-game homestand.

BY THE NUMBERS: 536 -- Career home runs for DH Jim Thome after he connected on a longball Aug. 31 against Boston. That number moved him into a tie with Mickey Mantle for 14th on the all-time list.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's so cool just to have it there. That's where it should be. I'm so glad that we did it and it's where it should be. It's safe, it's where baseball fans can see it." -- Sox slugger Jim Thome, on delivering the ball from his 500th home run to the Baseball Hall of Fame with his father last week.
