Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-09-11
--Manager Ozzie Guillen did announce before Wednesday's game that RHP Javier Vazquez would start Saturday on three days' rest, as rookie LHP Clayton Richard is out of the mix for now. That means RHP Lance Broadway is tentatively penciled in to start Sunday in the series finale. After that, it's anyone's guess.

--1B Paul Konerko's injury isn't as serious as it appeared Tuesday night. The ailment is being described as a slight sprain to his right knee. Konerko may be ready to play this weekend, but he wasn't going to make any promises. "I learned on the last injury not to make predictions because if you're wrong it looks bad and looks like a setback when it's normal," Konerko said. "So when I'm in uniform playing, that's when I can play." In his absence, Guillen went with Nick Swisher at first and then speed in the outfield, as Dewayne Wise and Jerry Owens got the start. Konerko injured the knee during a rundown in the fifth inning against the Blue Jays.

--OF Carlos Quentin's wrist surgery on Monday went well, but manager Ozzie Guillen repeated he isn't counting on the slugger's return this season. "I don't want to be negative about the situation, but I've got to be honest," Guillen said. "I don't care how quick you heal. I don't think it's going to heal in 20-something games."

--3B Joe Crede has been back with the team since going and seeking a second opinion over the weekend, and he continued to receive treatment Wednesday. As far as when, and if, he will possibly return, Crede said he had no answers. Either way, the free-agent-to-be is likely done on the South Side when the season comes to an end.

--C A.J. Pierzynski batted in the No. 2 hole of the lineup for the first time since May 13, and he responded well with a 2-for-4 showing to go along with three RBIs. Manager Ozzie Guillen wouldn't say if it was a permanent move, but he did like the idea of more speed at the top of his lineup.

BY THE NUMBERS: 17-11 -- The Sox finished their August 17-11, which marked their sixth consecutive winning month since September 2007.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Hopefully he'll be OK. It's unfortunate the way it happened. We have to move on. I won't make excuses, never did. We're in first place even with guys out of the lineup and even with guys struggling at the plate and hurt. But they give me the best they have and that's all you can ask." -- Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, on OF Carlos Quentin's wrist fracture.
