Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-09-17
--OF/1B Nick Swisher will be seeing a lot of bench time the final few weeks. According to manager Ozzie Guillen, Swisher has been searching at the plate, changing stances frequently, and the Sox can't wait for him to get out of his slump. That means Swisher has been thrown into the mix with OFs Brian Anderson, Dewayne Wise and Jerry Owens for playing time. "I think he's struggling real bad at the plate," Guillen said of Swisher. "I'm not saying he's not going to play, but I want to see how those (other three) guys perform on the field, and I'm going to take it from there." Anderson and Owens both started Tuesday.

--OF Ken Griffey Jr. was given the start as the DH, allowing slugger Jim Thome to rest. It didn't hurt that Thome was a career .240 hitter off Yankees starter Andy Pettitte, while Junior came into the game with a .340 average against the southpaw. The decision paid off, as Junior had a key RBI single off Pettitte in the fourth inning.

--1B Paul Konerko was back in the starting lineup and responded with a single and double in his first two at-bats. He was wearing a brace on his sprained right MCL, but Konerko was just glad to be back as early as he was. When he first went down with the injury Sept. 9, he thought it was an ACL injury and that he would miss the remainder of the season. "Believe me, there was no question when I did it, I was done," Konerko said. "When I was leaving the field, I was expecting the worst. I was thinking negative because I felt my knee snap into a place it doesn't go to. Never a good thing when dealing with ligaments."

--LHP Clayton Richard will get the start against the Yankees on Wednesday, after manager Ozzie Guillen was leaning toward RHP Lance Broadway. But following the win over New York, Guillen thought Richard would give his team the best chance because he had a bit more experience in that No. 5 spot this year. After Wednesday, the Sox will go with a four-man rotation until further notice.

--OF Carlos Quentin will have tests done Wednesday to check the progress of the fracture he has in his right wrist, and if the pins he had surgically inserted have made the healing process move along. Quentin is still hopeful to return this season, and the tests will show how likely that will or will not be.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9-30 -- The White Sox's record through Sept. 12 in games in which they had not hit a homer.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The only thing a lot of people look at is the batting average, but I'm hitting decent power numbers -- maybe not to what I want, but close -- but I'm not going to grade myself. I grade myself on what the team does and right now it's an A because no one thought we would be in this position." -- 1B/OF Nick Swisher, on his season, despite his disappointing numbers.
