Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --GM Ken Williams' last contract extension came before the team won the 2005 World Series. His next apparently has been in the works as his team struggles to win the American League Central. Williams wouldn't comment directly Friday on a report by SI.com that an extension was in the works for Williams, who has been the Sox GM since October of 2000, and has been with the team's front office for 24 years. The way Williams saw it, he had bigger concerns at this point. "I'm not going to worry about that stuff," he said. "It's a year-to-year thing for me. That's so low on my list of priorities right now. I don't know whatever the last thing is on my list of priorities (but) that's underneath."
--Manager Ozzie Guillen was once again facing questions about his starting rotation, as the next two games against Cleveland remained must-win. As of Friday, Guillen still planned to start RHP Javier Vazquez on Saturday, with just three days rest and LHP Mark Buehrle Sunday, also on three days rest following his 120-plus pitch game Wednesday. Guillen could change his mind about Buehrle, but it was unlikely with what was at stake. "I don't want to hurt this guy just because -- unless we need him desperate, then we make that decision," Guillen said. --OF Carlos Quentin was once again seeing doctors in Friday, and once again coming away with good news. The latest X-rays of his fractured wrist "look great", trainer Herm Schneider said. But while Quentin is "making progress" he isn't ready to take game-type swings. Guillen has said his hope is that Quentin be completely healthy for spring training next season.
--LHP Andrew Sisco made a visit to the Sox clubhouse on Friday, also fresh off a visit to the doctor to get an update on how his "Tommy John" surgery was progressing. Sisco's hope was to resume throwing lightly this fall, and being ready to go all out near the end of spring training. While Sisco doesn't factor in the team's bullpen plans right now, he could change some minds.
--SS Orlando Cabrera was back in the leadoff spot again on Friday, as Guillen's new-look lineup with OF Dewayne Wise at leadoff was scrapped. Another big reason was they were facing a left-hander, which meant Brian Anderson was given the start over Wise in left field anyway.
BY THE NUMBERS: 2-14 -- The Sox' record on turf over their last 16 games, after Minnesota swept three games from them last week at the Metrodome. It was the second time this season the Twins swept them there.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Who wouldn't want speed? It's a rare commodity. But you put that team in this ballpark (U.S. Cellular Field), and you're going to have tough times. So I think you're always striving for a blend. And that's not going to change." -- GM Ken Williams, when asked if he would want to switch rosters with Minnesota and their speedy lineup.
