"No," he responded, when asked if he could pursue Lo Duca later in camp if he doesn't like what he sees behind Pierzynski. "After some conversations and the flow of those conversations, I felt what we have here is just what we needed."

--3B Dayan Viciedo arrived in spring camp at Camelback Ranch on time, under the watchful eye of a front office that spent $10 million over the next four years in the 19-year-old Cuban defector. The obvious scenario was to keep Viciedo as close as possible to fellow Cuban teammates Alexei Ramirez and Jose Contreras.

"It's very important that anybody who comes from another country would like to have somebody from that country, and I have two," Viciedo said through interpreter Omer Munoz.

As far as his chances of unseating frontrunner Josh Fields at third base, "I'll go by who plays better and who plays the best for us," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It's wide open."

--RHP Bartolo Colon has no timetable on when he will start pitching this spring, as he continued to recover from bone chips removed from his elbow. But the veteran did tell manager Ozzie Guillen, "I will be ready by the time we leave here." That remains to be seen, considering he hasn't even thrown off the mound yet this spring.

--SS Gordon Beckham knows that his time might not be now. His goal, however, it to at least make it interesting. The first-round pick from last year's draft is on the fast track as far as the organization is concerned, but just how fast?

"I know it's a real long shot, to come in and make the team is a real long shot," Beckham said. "That helps me a little bit to know there is not too much pressure on me, but on the other hand I do want to show them what I've got. Maybe there is consideration that needs to be made. You have to approach it like that. These guys are going to be up there this year, but maybe I can push them a little bit."

Beckham, a natural shortstop, also is very aware that he might just have to switch positions when his time does come. With Alexei Ramirez expected to be the shortstop of the future, second or third could be options.

--RHP Jose Contreras continued to wow the organization in the first week of camp, not only showing up 30 pounds lighter, but three months ahead of schedule from the ruptured left Achilles' tendon he suffered last August. Rather than expecting Contreras back in July, Guillen said he could get at least one start this spring and challenge for the rotation very soon.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9-2 -- The record for starting pitcher Gavin Floyd last season in starts after a White Sox loss. He also posted a 4.05 ERA in those games.
