Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2009-05-16
--1B Paul Konerko was critical of his team after Wednesday's loss, and Guillen liked the fact that someone besides him was speaking out about it. "When we lose, I don't read papers, and we've been losing a lot, so I'm staying away from the papers a lot so far," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "No, no, what (Konerko) says, I respect the opinion of what my team says, as long as they are good for the ballclub, that's fine with me. I like to give my opinion to people, and I respect the opinion they give, whether it's bad or good, I respect their opinion."

--Manager Ozzie Guillen was expected to miss the Saturday and Sunday games in Toronto so he can fly back to Chicago for the college graduation of his oldest son, Ozzie Jr. He will rejoin the team for Monday's series finale with the Blue Jays.

--Manager Ozzie Guillen was tossed out of Wednesday's game in the sixth inning, just minutes after OF Jermaine Dye was tossed for throwing his helmet down after a called third strike. With Dye out of the game and the Sox short-handed in the outfield anyway, Jayson Nix had to move from second base to right field and Chris Getz was brought into the game to play second base. It was the first Guillen ejection of the season. What got him tossed, exactly? Well, Guillen was actually defending an earlier called strike by umpire Mike DiMuro on Cleveland hitter Jhonny Peralta. "I was protecting Peralta," Guillen said. "I asked Peralta if that pitch was low and in, and he said, 'Yes.' They thought I was crazy because I wasn't protecting J.D., I was protecting the opposition. I was here to protect baseball. Really crazy-type argument when the manager argues for someone else. Like I say, (DiMuro) was really consistent behind the plate."

BY THE NUMBERS: .208 -- Team batting average for the Sox in losses this season through May 10, compared to the .305 average in wins. That's why manager Ozzie Guillen considers this team so Jekyll and Hyde in 2009.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We love this kid. This guy went out of his way to get in shape and come back. I told him, 'You're not supposed to be here right now. You were supposed to be here in July, August. Just take something positive out of the negative. You should still be in rehab.'" -- Manager Ozzie Guillen, on the talk he had with RHP Jose Contreras when he informed him he was out of the starting rotation.
