Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-05-31
--SS Orlando Cabrera finally decided it was time to talk to manager Ozzie Guillen before Friday's game and turn the page on what was a bad week for Cabrera. Yes, it should have been done on Tuesday, the day that Guillen warned him that calling up to the press box during games to get errors overturned didn't look good in the eyes of his teammates, but at least he did it. "We're fine," Guillen said of the closed-door meeting. "I'm really excited about him coming down and talk to me about it, and clear the stuff. Clear it with his teammates. I don't want people out there... I think he digs his own hole. I send the message to him earlier. You picked the wrong town to do what you're doing. Most of what we talked about as a friend, not as a manager. When you have problems with my players, I want to talk to them as a friend. We got 24 players there, they got to look at that. He never offended me by any reason. I believe you have to say what you feel, you have to say what you think. Some people like what you say, some people don't. But I think right now, you pick a fight with the manager, or the players or the media, you're never going to win that one. Because they have so much stuff on you, and the manager."

--INF Juan Uribe rejoined the club on Friday and is scheduled to come off the 15-day disabled list Saturday with that sore right hamstring now healed. OF DeWayne Wise is likely the odd man out, but manager Ozzie Guillen also said that just because Uribe is back doesn't mean second base is guaranteed to him. "Whoever gets hot is going to play and I'm going to pick the matchups here and there and see what happens," Guillen said. "I think I figured out Uribe a little too late. You have to get the best out of him when he's hot. When Uribe is hot, he can carry any ball club in baseball. When Uribe is cold, he's frozen. I'm going to take the opportunity when he's playing well to play him. If he's cold a little bit, give the Missile (Alexei Ramirez) some at-bats or (Pablo) Ozuna and take advantage of him."

--Pitching coach Don Cooper said the starting staff will stay in the same order it currently is in, even with Monday being an off day. Three times this season, the Sox have changed the order around on off days for matchup purposes or to keep Javier Vazquez in his routine, but with the weather heating up and the schedule having less rest days now, Cooper wants his staff to take a breath when they can get it.

--C Toby Hall is scheduled to get the start on Saturday, with the Sox facing off against Rays LHP Scott Kazmir in the third game of the four-game series. Guillen was making that move for two reasons: the first being that Sunday is a day game, and the manager doesn't want Pierzynski playing a day game after a night game, and the other that Hall is killing the ball lately, going 14-for-30 (.467) in his last nine games and is hitting .533 against lefties.

--OF Nick Swisher could be getting an off day on Saturday, as his season-long slump continues. But the main reason Guillen said he may sit the switch-hitter is to get Brian Anderson some at-bats. Anderson has been used sparingly lately, and his bat has cooled down because of it.

BY THE NUMBERS: 14 -- The number of ejections manager Ozzie Guillen has been hit with in his four-plus years of being the Sox skipper.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You argue with the umpires, you aren't going to win it. You're not. We keep arguing, but it's not a winning situation. But you've got to let them know we're here." -- Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, on his season-long battles with major-league umpires.
