Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The White Sox are surprised to have both Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon back from injuries and ready to start the season in the rotation, and they also are pleased with the emergence of young players such as Josh Fields and Chris Getz. That doesn't mean the spring was all roses -- the team still is looking for a consistent leadoff hitter to emerge in April.
PLAYER NEWS: --CF Dewayne Wise was already hearing the boos following an 0-for-4 debut with three strikeouts in the opener against Kansas City. After a second 0-for-4 effort, the question becomes, how long will the White Sox let the recently named leadoff hitter keep that job? "I don't want to put him on the spot where he's like, 'Wow, I got to do good right away or I'm out,'" manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I want to see how good his at-bats are, what kind of at-bats he's going to give to us. But (Chris) Getz, I think Getz can lead off anytime easily here, but in the meanwhile, I don't want to just throw that kid in that situation. He's been doing well batting second, and he'll see better pitches because he's got the big boys coming up behind him."
--RHP Bobby Jenks continued silencing his critics Tuesday, when he closed out his first game almost flawlessly and also hit 96 mph consistently on the gun. There was concern that Jenks had lost his velocity the past few seasons, despite the fact that he had become a better all-around pitcher and had been putting up better numbers in that same period.
--LHP Clayton Richard and RHP D.J. Carrasco will be monitored the rest of the week, leading up to the series against Minnesota this weekend. The big reason why is because the White Sox want them fresh with RHPs Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon taking the mound in the first two games against the Twins. Richard and Carrasco were stretched out during the spring, so they will be ready in case either of the two veterans have to call it a day early.
--C Corky Miller has yet to see the field this season, but that could change Thursday, with the White Sox having a day game after Wednesday night's game. The other sign that Miller could make his White Sox debut in the finale against Kansas City is he worked frequently with LHP John Danks throughout the spring, and Danks is the scheduled starter.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Bartolo Colon (elbow surgery) showed enough this spring to be named the No. 5 starter, but LHP Clayton Richard is waiting in the wings if Colon struggles.
RHP Jose Contreras (ruptured Achilles tendon in August 2008) was the talk of the camp, not only showing up 30 pounds lighter, but also three months ahead of schedule. He is in the regular rotation now and ran through all the pitching drills with no setbacks.
INF Jayson Nix (right quad) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He injured the leg early in camp, missed a week and then tried coming back, only to suffer a setback.
