Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The team's front office and coaching staff had been saying all along that the team would give off a "different look" this season, especially on the offensive side of the ball, but it's still homer or bust through the first handful of games. The one aspect of the team that has lived up to expectations was the starting staff, with all five giving the Sox a chance to win and keeping them in the game.
PLAYER NEWS: --2B Chris Getz currently isn't challenging any batting titles so far, but with the rookie recovered from a bruised right elbow, he was back in the starting lineup against the Rays on Thursday and once again in the leadoff spot. Don't expect that to change. "We won a couple of games (with Getz leading off), he was on base a couple of times and we could do some stuff when he's on base," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I think we believe he will do a good job there. That's our hope. That's the one that's going to be there until we think he can't do it anymore."
--RF Jermaine Dye continued to quietly creep his way into the Sox record books Thursday, connecting on his third home run of the season. While Dye already reached the 300-career homer milestone in Detroit, the one against the Rays was his 140th as a member of the Sox, tying him for ninth on the franchise's all-time list. Dye also fouled a ball off his foot in the same game but remained in the game despite grimacing for a few minutes.
--LHP John Danks was not the least bit affected with the schedule change, making his first start in six days because of a postponed game with the Tigers and the club then opting to push him back in the rotation. Danks went six innings against Tampa Bay, allowing just two hits and one run, walking four and fanning eight in the 101-pitch outing. The time off also allowed manager Ozzie Guillen to now have a younger arm in between Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon so that the bullpen has a better chance of not getting overworked.
--RHP Bobby Jenks had been looking to find some consistency with his cutter going back to spring training, and may have finally stumbled over it Thursday. Jenks used the pitch to get Gabe Gross to ground out to first base, with the Rays having two on and trailing by one run with two outs in the ninth. After the game, Jenks said proudly of the pitch to Gross, "A cutter, it actually cut, too." He also continued to get his fastball in the mid-90 range, silencing the velocity questions.
MEDICAL WATCH:
2B Chris Getz (bruised right elbow) was hurt April 12, and he didn't play April 13 or 15. He started on April 16.
CF Dewayne Wise (separated right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 14. He is expected to be out until June.
INF Jayson Nix (right quad) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He injured the leg early in camp, missed a week and then tried coming back, only to suffer a setback. He is out indefinitely.
