Whitesoxclub.com | Chicago White sox News, whitesox Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The team's front office and coaching staff had been saying all along that the team would give off a "different look" this season, especially on the offensive side of the ball, but while they are getting production from the top of the new-look lineup, the home run is still their best source of scoring. The concerning aspect of the roster right now is the middle of the bullpen, which has changed looks three times already this year.
PLAYER NEWS: --OF Brian Anderson did not even make the trip to Texas on Friday, with the Sox announcing in the afternoon that the right oblique strain he suffered on Wednesday was bad enough for the team to place him on the 15-day disabled list. "Those kinds of injuries, you never know what's going to happen," manager Ozzie Guillen said of the decision. "Hopefully, you do it right the first time and it (doesn't) come back. When that thing (comes) back, it could be a long one. That's what we are trying to prevent from happening."
--INF Jayson Nix joined Scott Podsednik on the plane ride from Class AAA Charlotte, as the Sox made several roster moves before the start of the Rangers series. Besides calling up Podsednik and sending Jerry Owens out, Nix was called off the 15-day disabled list (right quad) and will technically take Anderson's spot on the roster for now. Because INF Brent Lillibridge can also play outfield, the Sox didn't have to necessarily call up another outfielder. Nix suffered his injury in spring, battling for the starting job at second base. He came back a week later and re-injured it, going on the DL. "That's tough to swallow, but it's part of the game and something you have to try to deal with," Nix explained. "You do your best to get through it as quick as you can and get better." Nix will be in a reserve role for now.
--DH Jim Thome tested out his injured heel on Thursday and declared himself fit to play, and on Friday he did, contributing in a big way. Showing no signs of the injury that cost him three games, Thome homered in the sixth inning, with the three-run shot tying the game up against the Rangers. With the homer, Thome now needs two homers to tie Mike Schmidt for 13th on the all-time list at 548.
--2B Chris Getz was back in the starting lineup on Friday, after missing five games with a right fractured middle finger. Before the rookie went down he was red-hot, hitting .464 in his last 28 at-bats. The time off did little to cool down, as Getz went 2-for-5, including connecting on what proved to be the game-winning triple in the seventh inning. Manager Ozzie Guillen could lighten Getz's workload the next five days, however, now that he has Nix in the mix. Getz has been sidelined twice so far this season, so the Sox do want to take it easy on the first-year player.
MEDICAL WATCH:
CF Brian Anderson (sore right oblique) left the April 29 game. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 1.
