Chicago White Sox Roster Report 2009-05-05
PLAYER NEWS:

--2B Chris Getz is still surprising the team with how well he's been performing this season, but the rookie has insisted on several occasions that while he welcomes the opportunity to hit leadoff, he is still "a prototypical No. 2 hitter." The leadoff role remains his for now, but not because the Sox haven't looked at others in that spot. So far this season they have used six different players in the leadoff spot, after five different players got a chance to play in that spot in 2008, with Orlando Cabrera handling most of the duties. Getz has made 12 starts there this season, leading the current group. His .311 batting average and .358 on-base percentage shines among that group.

--LHP Clayton Richard was challenging for a spot in the starting rotation in the spring, especially when it was believed that RHPs Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon might not be ready for the start of the season. But now Richard needs to show that he can be consistent in the bullpen. He has become a bit shaky of late in the long relief role.

--OF Jermaine Dye was on the bench for Monday's game with Kansas City with a hand injury suffered in Texas when he was plunked by a pitch. Scott Podsednik started in Dye's place. X-rays were negative.

--3B Josh Fields was on the bench for Monday's game with Kansas City with a hand injury suffered in Texas when he was plunked by a pitch. Jayson Nix started at third for Fields. X-rays were negative.

--INF Jayson Nix got the call at third base and fared well there, but not without some extra work. With Josh Fields out, Nix was forced into action at third base, a position he played nine times over the last three years in the minor leagues. Nix was actually brought to the ballpark earlier in the afternoon and worked out at third with bench coach Joey Cora. A natural second baseman, Nix showed that he would be able to survive.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RF Jermaine Dye (sore left hand) left the May 2 game. He sat out on May 3-4 and is day-to-day.

3B Josh Fields (hand) was out May 4 after getting hit by a pitch the night before. He is day-to-day.

CF Brian Anderson (sore right oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 30.
