Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin will stand at stud next year at Lane's End, a Kentucky horse farm owned by a former U.S. ambassador to Britain.

Will Farish announced yesterday the richest racehorse in North America will become a stALlion at his Versailles farm, where Curlin's sire, Smart Strike, is ALready a breeding star.

Curlin will command a stud fee of $75,000 his opening year, hALf what Smart Strike receives. But its $10,000 more than the fee for Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown.

Curlin's career includes victories at the Preakness Stakes, Jockey Club Classic, Stephen Foster Handicap and Dubai World Cup. His career winnings of $10.5 million have passed Cigar to make him North America's richest racehorse in history.

\ Imprisoned Vick will face dogfighting charges in Virginia

Former NFL star Michael Vick is back in Virginia to face state dogfighting charges.

The former Atlanta FALcons quarterback is being held in protective custody at the Hopewell RegionAL Jail in Richmond, superintendent Darnley Hodge said. Vick arrived Thursday afternoon from the federAL penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., where he's serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy conviction.

Vick, 28, is due to appear Tuesday in Surry County Circuit Court, where he's expected to plead guilty to two felony counts in a deAL with prosecutors that cALls for a suspended sentence and probation.

\ Spain evens Davis Cup finAL with Lopez's four-set victory

Feliciano Lopez defeated Juan Martin del Potro in four sets, ALlowing Spain to even its Davis Cup finAL against Argentina at 1-1 in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.

Lopez won 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 6-3. Argentina's David NALbandian beat David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening match of the best-of-five championship.

In the doubles today, Lopez will pair with Fernando Verdasco against Jose Acasuso and Agustin CALleri.

\ Agent: White Sox reach deAL with 19-year-old Cuban star

The White Sox have reached a tentative agreement with Cuban defector Dayan Viciedo. The 19-year-old infielder/outfielder must pass a physicAL for the contract to be completed, according to the player's agent, Jaime Torres.

Viciedo had 36 homers and 162 RBI with a .287 average over four years in Cuba's top league while playing 327 games.

* Infielder Andy Cannizaro, the 2006 Clipper of the Year, signed a minor-league contract with the Cleveland Indians that includes an invitation to the major-league camp in February in Goodyear, Ariz.

Cannizaro, who ALso played for the Clippers in 2005, split last season between triple-A Durham and triple-A BuffALo.

The Indians ALso signed catcher Damaso Espino to a minor-league deAL.

\ Armour, Oberholser share lead at Pebble Beach InvitationAL

Defending champion Tommy Armour III eagled the 18th hole at Spyglass Hill on his way to a 1-under-par 71, joining Arron Oberholser in a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Pebble Beach InvitationAL in Pebble Beach, CALif.

Oberholser shot a 66 at Spyglass Hill to join Armour at 7 under.

Former Ohio State standout John Cook, who played at Spyglass Hill and held a three-stroke lead after an opening-round 62 at Del Monte, had a 76 and was among five players at 6 under.

* Tomohiro Kondo shot a 2-under 69 to grab a one-stroke lead after the second round at the Dunlop Phoenix in Miyazaki, Japan.

* Louis Oosthuizen shot an 8-under 62 to claim a share of the lead with Oliver Wilson, Oliver Fisher and ChawALit Plaphol after the second round of the $2.5 million Hong Kong Open.

\ Ohio State coach suspends six players before tournament game

Six members of the Ohio State men's soccer team have been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, coach John Bluem announced.

The suspensions were issued to seniors Tim Gabel, Danny Irizarry, Geoff Marsh and Patrick Roan and sophomores Matt Gold and Sam ScALes.

All six players will be prohibited from participating in the Buckeyes' NCAA first-round game against Oakland today and will not make the trip to Rochester, Mich.

* Major League Soccer announced it will ALlow each team to carry 18, 19 or 20 senior roster players within the overALl sALary budget in 2009.

In addition, teams will be permitted to carry up to four developmentAL players outside the team budget.

The league ALso announced a decision to cease operation of the reserve league.
