Arizona has reached a one-year deal with free-agent right-hander Jon Garland with a mutual option for 2010, according to major-league sources.
Garland will receive $6.25 million in the first year of the contract. He also will receive a $2.5 million buyout if the Diamondbacks decline his option, bringing the total value of the deal to $8.75 million, sources said. If the team exercises his option and Garland opts for free agency, he will receive a $1 million buyout, making the total value $7.25 million.
The mutual option is valued at $10 million.
Garland is scheduled to have his physical later Wednesday.
Garland joins a rotation headed by 2006 Cy Young winner Brandon Webb, two-time All-Star Dan Haren and Doug Davis.
The Diamondbacks believe Garland will benefit from changing leagues, having spent his entire career in the American League. The team thinks Garland's sinkerball style, much like that of staff ace Webb, will thrive in the NL West.
Garland turned down arbitration from the Angels this offseason, which could have netted him a non-guaranteed contract of more than $12 million. However, he also risked taking a pay cut in arbitration. As recently as last week, Garland had been looking for a one-year deal in the neighborhood of $9 million, according to sources.
Garland, an All-Star in 2005, pitched his first eight seasons for the White Sox before joining the Angels in 2008. In Los Angeles, Garland went 14-8 with a 4.90 ERA in 196 2/3 innings. It was the first season he didn't top 200 innings since 2003. For his career, Garland is 106-89 with a 4.47 ERA.
Meanwhile, the Mets' pitching options continue to dwindle. Garland had been one of New York's secondary targets behind left-hander Oliver Perez. Left-hander Randy Wolf is also a secondary target for the Mets, but his representatives met with the Dodgers on Sunday and Monday, and could meet again on Wednesday.
News of the Garland deal was first reported by The Arizona Republic.
