Tigers pitching burned

Tigers pitching burned
DETROIT -- The 37-degree conditions Monday afternoon at Comerica Park must have seemed like 80 and sunny to the Chicago White Sox hitters, who pounded out a season-high 16 hits against the Detroit Tigers .

Two of the three White Sox big bombers -- Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko -- also produced major league history in a 10-6 win against the Tigers , blasting back-to-back home runs in the second inning for the first time this season.

That wasn't the history.

The fact the home runs were career No. 300 for each of them made Dye and Konerko the first pair in MLB history, according to Elias Sports Bureau, to accomplish the feat back-to-back in the same inning.

That meant Tigers starting pitcher Zach Miner also will be a footnote.

As good as Miner was in his first start -- a win in Toronto last week -- the right-hander never got a feel for things.

"I think Miner just had a bad day, and that happens," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Both starting pitchers (Miner and Chicago's Gavin Floyd) had a bad day in the worst conditions we've had to play in this season. Both guys struggled, but our guy struggled more than theirs," Leyland said.

"If you put yourself in a hole like we did, giving up eight runs, you're going to be in trouble ... you're suppose to be in trouble. It was a tough day to pitch, in defense to both pitchers, no question about that. But we had a shot at them."

The Tigers' shot came in the fifth inning, when they trailed 8-4 before outfielder Josh Anderson ripped a bases-loaded double to left-center that scored Magglio Ordonez, who started the inning with a walk. Ordonez was followed by a one-out walk to Carlos Guillen and a two-out walk to Brandon Inge, which loaded the bases for Anderson..

Trailing 8-6, the Tigers' threat ended with a harmless fly ball to right field by catcher Matt Treanor.

"The White Sox had to deal with it, too," Miner said of the weather, "but you have to find a way. If I would have made a couple of better pitches in the third and held them without giving up a few of those runs ... I just didn't make the pitches when I had to. Today, my pitching was just inconsistent."

The Tigers had a couple hitting stars, and their names weren't Ordonez or Miguel Cabrera.

Shortstop Ramon Santiago, hitting No. 6 for the first time in his career, made Leyland look like a genius, going

3-for-5 and hitting his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third inning.

Anderson, who was part of a late spring training trade with the Atlanta Braves, made his first start at Comerica Park and collected his first hit of the season, a single, and his first RBI on the first pitch he saw from Floyd. He went

2-for-5 with a career-high tying three RBIs.

Konerko had a huge day at the plate for the White Sox, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Teammate Carlos Quentin was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two home runs, his third and fourth of the season.
