A consistory is an assembly or court having ecclesiastical or administrative authority, especially in the Roman Catholic Church, where it refers to a formal council or assembly of bishops and cardinals overseen by the Pope for the examination of the suitability of candidates for the cardinalate or the examination and decision of certain cases that may be presented to the Holy See.
