French Canadian fur traders and explorers who traveled up and down the rivers and lakes of the Canadian interior from the 18th to the 19th centuries. They were skilled woodsmen and portage leaders who navigated the waterways of North America for the Hudson’s Bay Company and other fur-trading companies.
